On a sunny, snow-covered morning Peninsula Branch 62 Sgt-at-Arms Burton White lowered the cenotaph flag at sunrise. This was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at 8:30 am. Burton White and Bill White laid a wreath as Louisa Hare, Mae White and Kathy Campbell looked on. The Last Post, Silence, Rouse and Act of Remembrance were performed and Kathy Campbell read aloud the names below of soldiers that participated in the Battle of Vimy Ridge that are connected to the peninsula.
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
LEST WE FORGET
LEST WE FORGET
In 2003 the federal government decreed by an Act of Parliament that April 9 each year be called Vimy Ridge Day. To commemorate this historically important battle, all flags at all Legion branches will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset.
This April 9th marks the 108th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge (April 9-12, 1917). Today we remember, in gratitude and sorrow, the 100,000 Canadians who fought, the more than 10,600 casualties and the close to 3,600 among them who died at Vimy Ridge.
On April 9th we remember all those Vimy Veterans. Especially those who have been identified as either being born and raised on the Peninsula, connected to a Legion or Ladies Auxiliary member or became a resident of the Peninsula.
